Cohere, the leader in enterprise AI, today announced a target of doubling the headcount of its London global research hub over the next year to roughly 50. British-Canadian Co-founder and CEO Aidan Gomez, who studied at Oxford University, made the announcement during a visit to the city for the AI Safety Summit.
“London has emerged as one of the leading artificial intelligence research cities in the world over the past several years, and we felt it was important to scale up our commitment to the market,” said Aidan Gomez. “Early on, we identified London as a key research centre for us, and we are doubling down on our efforts to build out the team in the market. It was an honor to meet with Prime Minister Sunak earlier this year, and I’m grateful for the support of the British government as Cohere builds out a world-class research team here.”
Rt Hon Jeremy Hunt MP, Chancellor of the Exchequer said, “Cohere doubling its UK workforce underscores Britain’s clear leadership position in the development of Artificial Intelligence. Having Cohere’s chief scientist and a critical research centre based in the UK speaks to our country’s role at the heart of this technology revolution.”
In 2022, Cohere launched its London offices following the company’s hiring of Chief Scientist Phil Blunsom, who joined after more than seven years at DeepMind. A Professor of Computer Science at the University of Oxford, and a Senior Research Fellow of St Hugh's College, Phil heads up Cohere’s London research hub.
Since opening its office in London, Cohere has expanded significantly in the city, with about 10% of its global workforce currently based there. The company’s London office is one of its largest research facilities, along with Toronto and San Francisco.
As part of its announced expansion in London over the next year, Cohere announced the hiring of Wojciech Galuba as its new Director of Data. Wojciech joins the Cohere team after more than six years of working on Meta’s AI efforts.
